Experience

Teacher, Language Arts Aug 2015- present Raleigh, NC Teacher, Reading and Language Arts Aug 2012-June 2015 Gainesville, FL Tutor and Research Assistant Jan 2011-Dec 2011 America Reads, University of Florida, Alachua County School System, Gainesville, FL Through my experience in schools over the past 5 years, I have worked closely with the Common Core Standards and have taught students of all reading and writing ability levels essential literary analysis and writing skills. In addition, I was on a team to improve the curriculum for 8th grade Language Arts. During this time, I was also given the opportunity teach a special program for advanced students that provided me the flexibility to create my own challenging Language Arts curriculum. In this gifted program, my students worked on projects to enter into the National History Day (NHD) competition. NHD is like science fair for history. The project requires students to conduct original research that relates to a theme. As an instructor for these projects, I taught essential research skills and guided 8th grade students through a project that would be difficult for many college students. After conducting research and writing a five-page research paper, students turned their findings into a 10-minute documentary or a website. The projects were then entered in the county competition and winning entries moved on to the state level. My master's degree in K-12 Reading Education gave me essential skills in reading and writing instruction. In addition to my genuine love for creating engaging content, I largely credit my master’s degree for my successful teaching record. I have been rated “highly effective” every year I have taught, and I believe the unique skills, strategies, and interventions I learned from my master’s degree deserve much of the credit. I would love to use my skills to help your child improve their reading and writing ability levels, to get your child ready for high school or college, to help them catch up to grade level if they are behind, or anything in between. To view writing samples please go to laurenmhiner.com. Click on "Student Work" to see a variety of writing samples. All samples are students in 8th grade. On the site, you can also view NHD research papers and documentaries (under the "National History Day" tab) and my full resume.

Hobbies

I absolutely enjoy any excuse to get outside. I love running, playing on my co-ed soccer team, and heading to the beach, but my all-time favorite outdoor activity is hiking. I use any long weekend as an excuse to head to the mountains. My favorite local destination is Asheville, where the number of breathtaking hikes seem endless. The Looking Glass, a hike that takes you to a view that puts everything in perspective, is always my top choice when I'm in town. I am so in love with the beauty of Asheville and the surrounding areas that I have chose it as the location for my wedding next summer! When forced to stay indoors I pursue a number of hobbies. I love to cook, bake, read, watch Netflix, crochet, and refinish old furniture. If I wasn’t a teacher, I would probably find a way to bake for a living. Almost every Sunday you can find me whipping up something in my beloved Kitchen Aid mixer. While enjoying my creations you can find me either watching too much Netflix or reading. I am obsessed with Netflix comedy TV shows and could sit and watch episodes of Parks and Recreation, Friends, or The Office for hours. After reading Ender's Game with my class least year, I became hooked and am currently working my way through the series and sub-series. Because I genuinely enjoy teaching, especially when I am able to create fun and engaging lessons, I also spend some of my free time continuing to impact education and the lives of young people. Currently, I write part time as a content writer for Shmoop, a website that provides resources to both students and teachers in the most energetic and hilarious ways possible.
